A delay in the sowing date of fine-seed varieties of faba bean (Vicia faba L. var. major Harz) is desirable because of possible prolongation of the processing campaign. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of sowing dates upon the yield and the course of phenological phases of the fine-seed ‘Gobik’ cultivar of faba bean. In conditions typical for the region of Cracow, sowing in the first two weeks of April led to the achievement of a 3.5-7.1 (t ha-1) yield; in the case of delayed sowing the yield was considerably lower. Water shortage and high temperatures in the phases of seed germination and emergence were the main factors determining the yield.
