Effect of the insecticide Karate 2.5 EC (lambda-cyhalothrin) on the mitotic process in root meristems of the
pea (Pisum sativum L.)

The effect of the insecticide Karate 2.5 EC (lambda-cyhalothrin) of the
synthetic pyrethroid group on the mitotic process in root meristems of pea
seedlings was investigated. Two concentrations of the preparation were
used: 0.04% (recommended for agricultural practice) and 0.08%. The
experiment was conducted in laboratory conditions at 10°C and 20°C. The
evaluation was made directly after 4-h action of the insecticide and after
the successive two days of the post-incubation period. It included
analysis of the mitotic and phase index and aberrations in metaphase,
anaphase, early telophase, and interphase.
The effect of the investigated insecticide was manifested by a decrease in the mitotic activity and
changes chiefly of the c-mitotic type. The action of Karate 2.5 EC
depended on temperature, length of the post-incubation period and, to a
smaller degree, on the concentration of the insecticide.
