The use of ultra-violet rays for water disinfection during chicory forcing

Four chicory cultivars were forced in water culture. During forcing ultra-violet radiation of 254 nm, emitted by a 64 W lamp, was used for constant water disinfection. The application of ultra-violet radiation for water disinfection significantly increased the weight of feeding roots in the studied chicory cultivars, this resulting in their better yield. The yield of chicory heads (cvs. Atlas, Rinof, Rumba, and Salsa) forced in disinfected water was significantly higher than that on control plots. Water disinfection during chicory forcing increased the stalk yield of most cultivars.
