The effect of pollination on ACC oxidase activity in different parts of petunia flowers and on the acceleration of senescence of cut and intact flowers was investigated. In the period of formation of an abscission layer a considerable content of ACC, increased ability of ethylene synthesis, and high ACC oxidase activity were observed in the basal part of the corolla and style. The formation of the abscission layer was evaluated by measuring forces necessary for separating the style from the ovary and the corolla from the receptacle.
