air and nutrient solution. I. Growth and yields of plants

It was found that a higher air temperature (17°C) at night stimulated the
vegetative growth and increased the early and total yield of tomato as
compared with a lower one (11°C). When the temperature of the nutrient
solution was increased to a constant value of 20°C the total yield of
fruit rose, irrespective of the air temperature. At a night air
temperature of 17°C, associated with a nutrient solution temperature of
20°C, the growth of the main stem and roots was inhibited while the
fruiting of plants began earlier. At the lower air temperature (11°C) a
constant nutrient solution temperature of 20°C delayed harvest.
Planting tomato seedlings at a more advanced stage of development (with 7-8 true leaves) decreased early
yields, though the total yield was higher than that obtained from tomatoes
with 3-4 or 5-6 true leaves, irrespective of the temperature of the air and of the nutrient solution.
Higher air temperatures at night improved the supply of N-NO3 and K
for plants, while tomatoes grown in nutrient solution with a constant
temperature of 20°C contained more N-NO3,
P, and K than those grown at natural temperatures of the nutrient solution.
