Use of ethephon (Ethrel) in onions grown for sets (cultivar Wolska) sown in rates of 200, 150, 100, and 50 kg seeds per ha gave a high marketable yield even at the lowest rate. The most favourable effect has been obtained while treating onions with 1 dm3 Ethrel per ha 42 days after emergence. Higher doses of this chemical - 1.5 and 2 dm3/ha used both 42 and 56 days after emergence decreased the marketable yield of onion sets, however, its share in the total yield was increased.
